The PRAXIS Series: Professional Assessments for Beginning Teachers

The Minnesota Board of Teaching has adopted the PRAXIS I and PRAXIS II Tests to assess the skills of all candidates applying for their initial Minnesota Teaching License. The PRAXIS I Series assesses basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. The PRAXIS II Tests assesses candidates’ knowledge and skills associated with professional knowledge (Principles of Learning and Teaching) and knowledge related to the subject matter understanding (Subject Matter/Content).

Regardless of licensure area, all initial licensure candidates must complete the PRAXIS I Series. Undergraduate and Second Major Certificate Students must complete the tests as a part of the formal admission process to the Education Department. Institutional Test Score Reports must be received by the Education Department by the admission deadlines of October 15 or May 1. Personal Test Score Reports are not an acceptable substitute. MAED students should consult with the MAED Program Director regarding the date by which reports must be received.

Students may consult The PRAXIS Series Registration Bulletin for information regarding each format or go to the Educational Testing Services website at www.ets.org/praxis. The bulletin is available in the Education Office, Mendel Hall, Room 201, or it can be downloaded from the Educational Testing Service website.

When registering for either the PRAXIS I or PRAXIS II Test Series, be sure to specify the College of St. Catherine Institutional Code RA6105 as the Attending Institution/Recipient Test Code.

The PRAXIS II Series is required of all initial licensure candidates; however, the tests required of the candidate are based on licensure area. The CSC Education Department recommends (not required) that all candidates complete the PRAXIS II Series after the completion of foundational/methods courses and before the student teaching term.

We recommend completing the PRAXIS II exams just before student teaching to ensure you will be eligible to apply for licensure when you complete your program. In the event that you waited until the end of your student teaching experience to complete the exams, we would not be able to recommend you for licensure until you receive passing scores and the College receives its copy of the scores. What this impacts is your ability to apply for your teaching license, and in the event that you plan to accept a job after your student teaching.
