This one week institute will focus on options for managing a variety of interpreting assignments. These include video relay and community interpreting jobs that are challenging because of the nature of the material, the seriousness of the situation, consumers who are emerging language users, consumers who are from a culture different from that of the interpreter, or a register that is more challenging to manage. Participants will discuss factors in choosing consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, working with a CDI or working with a Deaf Community Health Worker. Participants will practice techniques for consecutive interpreting including managing the pace of the interaction, appropriate methods for pausing presenters.
Educational Objectives
Participants will be able to:
- Describe the advantages and disadvantages of using consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting and teaming with a CDI.
- Recognize factors that influence the choice to interpret at various places along the continuum of consecutive and simultaneous interpreting.
- Apply knowledge to interpret moving between consecutive and simultaneous interpreting appropriately.
- Use appropriate management skills when interpreting consecutively.
- Apply appropriate skills for working in a team with a CDI.
- Assess their ability to successfully transfer meaning within an interpretation.
Target Audience
Community and video relay interpreters.
Housing
On-campus housing is available for $270 for six days. The dorms are arranged in a suite configuration, with three private sleeping rooms sharing common living space and a bathroom. The dorms are air conditioned. Participants are not required to stay on campus.
Meals
Lunch is included in your registration fee. Breakfast is optional. Both meals will be offered in the University Dining Room. There are also a number of restaurants and grocery stores within four to six blocks of the campus.
Cancellation Policy
Cancellations received on or before May 20th will be eligible for a full refund.
Cancellations received May 21st - June 14th will be eligible for a full refund of any dorm or meals prepaid, and the registration fee minus $50.
No refunds for cancellations received on June 15th or later.
