The Department of Music offers major programs in music and music education, as well as numerous performance and classroom opportunities for all students.
Students who pursue a Music Major follow one of three tracks, each leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree. The Liberal Arts track provides an opportunity for students to develop performance skills and to gain an understanding of music in theory and culture. Students wishing to pursue a more rigorous course of study in music must be accepted into either the Performance and Pedagogy track or the Music Education track leading to music teaching licensure. The latter two tracks are primarily geared toward vocalists, pianists (or harpists) and require an audition.
A wide variety of career goals may be pursued by music majors at St. Kate’s. Some students prepare for careers in music education as elementary or secondary school teachers. Others concentrate on honing their own skills as performers, with the goal of opening their own private teaching studios, performing in the local music community, leading music in worship or moving on to more advanced study in graduate school. Still others simply wish to expand their understanding and experience of the discipline of music as a primary component of a broad, liberal education. They may choose to pursue double majors, pairing music study with such disciplines as business, theater, theology, French, political science, psychology or science and pre-medicine.
The department also offers an option for a minor in music, as well as a certificate program in Piano Pedagogy. The College of St. Catherine is a full member of the National Association of Schools of Music.
Our ensembles include the Women's Choir, the Saint Catherine Choral Society and instrumental chamber ensembles. (CLICK ON THE "ABOUT US" BUTTON IN UPPER LEFT, THEN ON THE LINK "ENSEMBLES" FOR MORE INFO.) These are open to majors and non-majors alike.
