Admission Requirements for all
Masters Program Concentrations
DEGREE
Applicant must have completed a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with a cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. (Applicants with a cumulative GPA below 3.0 must submit GRE scores – see below.)
MAJOR
Applicant must have completed a baccalaureate major in nursing (i.e., initial major or upper-division, post-baccalaureate second major), from a program accredited by the National league for Nursing Accrediting commission (NLNAC) or Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) with a grade of no less than B- in every course.
NURSING LICENSE
Applicant must hold a current U.S. nursing license. Verification of current nursing licensure with eligibility for licensure in Minnesota will be made prior to students entering the program. Nurse practitioner concentration only: Evidence of professional liability insurance as a registered nurse/nurse practitioner will be verified prior to beginning clinical courses.
EXPERIENCE
Applicant must have 2 years of recent clinical practice as a registered nurse (R.N.). Applicants to the Nurse Practitioner concentration in pediatric and adult-gerontological options must have at least 1 year experience in the area of specialization. Applicants to the neonatal nurse practitioner option must have 2 years recent experience in a Level 3 nursery.
PREREQUISITE COURSEWORK
Applicant must have completed a post-secondary statistics course inclusive of inferential and descriptive statistics with a grade of not less than C (or S). Requirement waived for applicants who already have a master’s degree in nursing from an accredited institution.
RECOMMENDATIONS
Master of Arts in Nursing recommendation forms must be submitted by three individuals who can attest to the applicant’s ability to satisfactorily pursue graduate study and can address the applicant’s nursing practice. Specialty area must be specified on form.
PERSONAL STATEMENT
Applicant must submit a typed, 300-500 word statement that addresses: a) goals and objectives for professional growth and graduate study; b) concept of the advanced role in nursing, and c) ideal practice setting. The statement will be viewed as evidence of writing proficiency.
INTERVIEW
Qualified applicants will be contacted for a required interview.
APPLICANTS WHOSE NATIVE LANGUAGE IS OTHER THAN ENGLISH
An applicant whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the Michigan English Language Assessment (MELAB); scores must be no more than two years old. Minimum TOEFL scores for admission to a graduate program at the College of St. Catherine are 600 on the paper-and-pencil test or 250 on the computer-based test. Minimum acceptable MELAB score is 90. Requirement waived for students who have completed a baccalaureate or graduate degree at an accredited college or university in the United States.
APPLICANTS WITH POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION OR LICENSURE OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES
An applicant with post-secondary course work or a college or university degree completed outside the United States or whose nursing license is from outside the United States must submit an official evaluation from the Credential Evaluation Service of the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools as well as original transcripts and official translations of all documents not in English. An applicant who attended or graduated from a post-secondary institution outside the Unites Stated but whose nursing education has been completed entirely in the United States may use any NACES-approved evaluation service, such as World Education Services (WES). APPLICANTS WHO ARE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent resident must also submit a College of St. Catherine International Student Application and Certificate of Finances. Please direct questions to Multicultural and International Programs and Services (651) 690-6029.
Admission decisions are made by the nursing faculty in the Master's Degree Program. The nursing faculty evaluate each applicant’s background, qualifications, and potential for graduate study as a whole. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.
