Phlebotomy

St. Catherine University

Welcome to the Phlebotomy Certificate Program

A phlebotomist obtains and prepares quality blood samples for laboratory testing. This program addresses proper technique of sample collection and processing as well as basic anatomy and physiology, medical terminology and the study of disease processes.

The goals of the phlebotomy program are to provide academic and clinical education for capable individuals to acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for becoming a specialist in obtaining blood specimens by venipuncture and microtechniques. The graduates will be able to collect quality blood specimens for the purpose of laboratory analysis. A phlebotomist must have knowledge of the healthcare system, the anatomy and physiology related to laboratory testing and phlebotomy, the collection and transport requirements for specimens, documentation and patient records, and the interpersonal skills needed to provide quality patient care.

Graduates of this program will be qualified to work as phlebotomists in healthcare settings. Also, because the program is NAACLS approved, you are immediately qualified to take a national certification exam. You may become a PBT (ASCP) by passing the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Certification Examination or a Certified Laboratory Phlebotomists (CLPlb) by passing the National Certifying Agency Examination.
