Welcome to Community Work and Learning What is Community Work and Learning?
Methods of teaching and learning that increase the relevance of academic material by allowing students to apply their education in a hands-on and beneficial way for both themselves and the community. Students are asked to fulfill unmet needs identified by community leaders and are provided with structured times to reflect on civic, social and inter-cultural issues. The term includes, but is broader than, service-learning and action research, and allows for the synthesis of community work and Catholic Social Teaching. Together, Community Work and Learning is an effort to foster partnerships that raise awareness and generate action on social justice issues.
Why Community Work and Learning?
Studies show that students who participate in service-learning show significant positive outcomes in the following areas: academic performance (GPA, writing skills, critical thinking, etc.), values commitment to activism and promoting cultural understanding, self-efficacy, leadership, and plans to participate in service after college. This public work offers an unparalleled opportunity to revitalize the education process while collaborating with community leaders to improve the quality of life for Twin Cities residents.
