Courses with Service Learning: Advanced Spanish, Senior Seminar and Reflections of the Spanish Civil War: Literature, Art and Film

"I have incorporated service-learning components in several of my classes. The Spanish Senior Seminar course involved matching students' interests and majors with local organizations where the students could utilize their Spanish language skills to benefit the community. Some of the service-learning opportunities included tutoring English to adults, teaching children Spanish, researching health disparities in Hispanic communities and working at the resource center associated with a women's shelter.

"I believe service learning is an exceptional way for students to apply their classroom learning directly in the community in a way that is mutually beneficial. The effort invested in including service learning in a class is always worth it because the students gain so much from the experience and it reinforces their classroom learning. During class I ask students to share their experiences, as well as in written reflections for homework, and I thoroughly enjoy hearing and reading their enthusiastic reports."
