Community Work and Learning

Stephanie Guzman '09

Major: Nursing, Spanish

Community Partner: La Clinica- West Side Community Health Services

"I chose to work off-campus in our community because I wanted to get to know the community I live in better and to start my journey in making a difference in the life of individuals and a community. I specifically chose La Clinica because I wanted an experience in nursing that involved obstetrics and gynecology in a medical atmosphere where I would almost exclusively use Spanish language and work with Latino patients.

I work predominately with the Women's Health Educator with prenatal classes and reproductive and family planning consultation. I also am doing a study in the clinic to see where are there areas of improvement based on quality of services provided and timeliness of services. I shadow various health care professionals at the clinic in order to get a clear idea of the role each professional plays in this clinic. Throughout all of this, I am able to speak prodominately Spanish and when not, English.

The aspect I like most about my work is that I am able to learn in an environment that is multilingual and multicultural. It is giving me experience and knowledge that I will continue to use for the rest of my nursing and my Spanish-language related careers."
