Community Work and Learning

"I worked in the Center for Community Work and Learning in my last year and a half of being a St. Kate’s student. During my time with the CWL, I worked primarily with service-learning courses, particularly TRW. I worked with professors, students, and community partners to better integrate classroom work with real organizations in the community. In the Community Leadership Program, I worked at Cedar Riverside,as the Volunteer Coordinator, where I supervised service-learners and volunteers, including students from St. Kate’s!"

"After graduating, I went into a year-of-service, intentional-community volunteer program, the St. Joseph Worker Program (SJW). I came to this program because of its focus on exploring concepts, values, and intersections of leadership, social justice, living simply and sustainability in community, and spirituality. As a full-time volunteer, I lived in a house in Minneapolis with five other SJW Women and worked with two different organizations, Peace House - a welcoming community where people from a range of economic backgrounds, both those who are housed and those who are not, come to enjoy good conversation and companionship – and Women Against Military Madness (WAMM) - a feminist non-violent organization working to dismantle systems of militarism and global oppression. I am continuing on as an SJW for a second year, this time in El Paso, TX. I will work with an organization called Annunciation House, a hospitality house for recent immigrants."

"I have gained so much from my time as a student worker in the CWL, both in terms of valuable work experience as well as personal growth. Working both in the office and at Cedar Riverside allowed me to develop leadership skills while exploring how my passions can be utilized in the professional sphere. I was lucky enough to even be able to directly connect my work in the office as a student to my post-graduate job. During my last semester working in the CWL, I worked with a professor to create a new GSJ course focused on homelessness with a service-learning component. As a student, this was a very exiting opportunity to be a part of this creative process. But just as exciting, was having students from this course come to Peace House for their service-learning experience. It was wonderful being able stay connected to my experiences as a student worker in the CWL and my post-graduate life."
