Exploring Entrepreneurship *
Winter Term 2008
Offered on 8 Monday Evenings, 6:00-9:30 pm

This is a course based on both theory and practice - it is meant to be experiential. This course is for the emerging to experienced entrepreneur. The course is for those curious to know more about themselves and entrepreneurship. The course is also for those entrepreneurs who have launched and want to examine their venture in an emotionally rich and invigorating environment while taking the time to plan its future.

The business planning process captures the essence of what it takes to bring a dream/idea/concept into a viable reality. This course is about developing a concrete way to express oneself in the world through the creation and building of a business venture - first on paper, and then tweaked and edited as clarity emerges and insights are explored upon implementation.

The goal is to broaden the perspective of the way one views their career, their life and those within it. An examination of what it takes to start, nurture and grow a business will be explored in readings, case studies, class discussions and through group problem-solving techniques. You will bring an idea into reality by writing a condensed 8-component business plan individually or with classmates, and present it to your peers. For those entrepreneurs who have already launched, this is your opportunity to further refine your ideas and develop the next level of sophistication that will sharpen and expand your entrepreneurial leadership skills.

*For extra credit you could participate April 5, 2008 in the Elevator Pitch Contest put on by the Katies Entrepreneur Organization (KEO) here on campus. You could possibly win $500.00 by presenting your venture idea in 90 seconds to an audience and panel of experts who will vote on your idea.

Small Business Finance*
Fall Term 2007
Offered on 8 Saturdays, 1-4:30 pm

Course Description:
This course is a practical approach to small business finance and entrepreneurship that will strengthen your self-concept, increase your leadership capacity, improve project management skills, and expand your intellectual curiosity regarding numbers. Because entrepreneurship is an expression of ones dream/vision/life purpose through a business entity, exploration of personal financial and money management habits and strategies that will lead to a financially astute disposition are addressed first. This includes comparing career options of salaried positions vs. small business ownership and investment options in your field of study.

The mastery of basic elements of personal and small business financial management are introduced and practiced throughout the course. Students will create a personal financial plan and a venture financial plan for a small business entity projecting out three years. The projects will include research, case study readings, possibly interviewing business owners, calculations, editing of calculations, personal reflection, and each student will take risks to project their financial future. Students will learn options to finance their dreams in a way that captures the essence of the work they need to do while they are on this earth. An 80-question comprehensive exam covering the key points of the course will be given during the last class session.
