Shari Ballard

Executive Vice President and President of Best Buy International Operations


Shari Ballard was named one of Magazine's 50 Most Powerful Women in Business.  Shari Ballard is President, International and the Chief Human Resources Officer for Best Buy Co. Inc., a multinational retailer of technology and entertainment products and services. In this dual role, she is responsible for overseeing operations in China, Canada and Mexico. Ballard is also responsible for global talent attractions, staffing and retention, leadership development, diversity, organizational design, employee education and development, compensation and benefits, and employee relations.

Spending the majority of her professional career at Best Buy, Ballard was hired in 1993 as an assistant store manager and was subsequently promoted to general manager at the Flint, Michigan, store. In 1997, in partnership with store teams, she successfully implemented a new operating model across hundreds of Best Buy stores. Ballard then moved to Human Resources, accepting responsibility for the retail stores Human Resources group. In 2004, she earned the role of executive vice president of Human Resources and Legal. In 2006, her role grew to include oversight of the U.S. websites and call centers.

In 2007, Ballard assumed responsibility for Best Buy stores in the United States, including territory and district staff and store personnel, as well as customer research and development, including Best Buy’s lab stores. As executive vice president of Retail Channel Management, Ballard focused her energies on deepening customer relationships and better utilizing the full range of talent and resources that reside within the company’s U.S. retail stores to drive growth for Best Buy. In 2010, Ballard was appointed to president of Americas and executive vice president for Best Buy business in the United States and Mexico. In addition to her regional responsibilities, she oversaw Best Buy’s U.S. stores, bestbuy.com, customer call centers and business customer groups. In 2012, she was appointed president of international, overseeing business in China, Canada and Mexico. In mid-2013, in addition to president of international, she was promoted to chief human resources officer.

Ballard serves on the Board of Directors of the Delhaize Group, Minneapolis Institute of Arts and the University of Minnesota Foundation.

Ballard graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan – Flint.
