How Does Counseling Work?

Students can set in motion the resolution of issues by working with a counselor. Although the therapeutic process is different for everyone, counseling has an emphasis on identifying and achieving specific client goals. Counseling may involve the use of skill-building assignments, reading, referral to community resources or any number of other possibilities.
A counselor can help you:

  • Increase self-esteem
  • Understand family and personal relationships
  • Explore career or academic concerns
  • Overcome grief, depression or anxiety
  • Resolve parenting difficulties
  • Explore sexuality concerns
  • Reduce financial stress
  • Work through abuse issues
  • Improve stress and anger management skills
  • Develop assertiveness
  • Manage substance abuse or eating disorders
  • Get help in referring a friend to counseling
