Cisco Clean Access FAQs

Why does the College Use Cisco Clean Access?

Prior to August 2004, we had several disruptions of Internet access and network performance caused by virus infections. The majority of the problems were caused by infected student owned computers. To protect the College as a whole we must prohibit computers which are vulnerable to virus problems from damaging the network.

What happens if something is missing or out of date?

If your PC Windows software needs updating you will be directed to Microsoft Windows Update. There you will need to scan for new critical updates and install them. Completing this process may require rebooting your PC. If your computer has the Windows XP operating system and you need to install critical update Service Pack 2, you will need to contact the Help Desk at x6402. The Internet connection for the Cisco Clean Access Login is limited to ½ an hour. This is not enough time to download Service Pack 2 from the Internet.

A similar process will occur when your PC has missing or outdated anti-virus software. You must install our McAfee VirusScan Enterprise software from CD. CDs are available at the Help Desk - room 120 Coeur de Catherine. If you have the software installed right click on the virus shield icon and choose 'Update Now'

Can I use Norton Anti-Virus or other Anti-Virus software?

Because of the complexity of supporting multiple anti-virus products we require the use of the McAfee software. The software is free. It requires removing your Norton (Symantec) or other brands of anti-virus software. Use the Control Panel, Add/Remove Software to review what Anti-Virus software is installed on you computer. Make sure you uninstall all other anti-virus software beforeinstalling McAfee.

What about Macintosh Computers?

Macintosh computers will require updates during a later phase of this project. Currently Macs must login to Cisco Clean Access, but no security rules are enforced.

How do I know if I have Service Pack 2?

Right click on your My Computer icon and then left click on Properties. The version of Windows and the name of the most recently installed Service Pack will be displayed on the General tab.

How often will Cisco Clean Access require logging in?

We will require logins weekly after the initial roll-out is complete. We may require it more frequently if a major virus or security patch is announced.

What should I do if I suspect my computer has had virus, spyware or other problems in the past?

PC’s which have unresolved software issues may have trouble applying new software including Cisco Clean Access. Windows Updates or McAfee. If you know your PC is suspect, call the Help Desk we will advise you on what steps to take.
We cannot fix hardware problems. Please contact your PC manufacturer for authorized service companies.
