First Step is held in two-one week residential sessions.
First Session: June 15, 2009 - June 20, 2009
Second Session: July 6, 2009-July11, 2009

The Modesta Reichert Gamble First Step Summer Institute is a unique college immersion experience helping to prepare young women of color for higher education. The one-week residential program is offered twice throughout the summer. It is an innovative mix of self-development, observing courses, career assessment and development, and social activities. Students will meet other young women of color from throughout Minnesota while learning about financial aid, scholarships/grants and preparing college applications, learning about other cultures, and experiencing college life. The program will enable students to get a step up and a step ahead in making a successful transition from high school to college.

AT THE COMPLETION OF THE PROGRAM YOU WILL:
  • Be a step ahead in motivation for a college education;
  • Have a clearer understanding of college expectations;
  • Be more focused on choices and opportunities for careers;
  • Have a network of friends in college;
  • Have continuing access to guidance, support and information from staff during the following school year; and
  • Have a complete portfolio of information compiled during the program.

PROGRAM PROFILE:
  • The Modesta Reichert Gamble First Step Summer Institute is available to a select group of qualified students.
  • The curriculum is designed to prepare students to explore and identify career options, build study skills, work with faculty, staff and students, and interact with the community.
  • The two one-week residential program dates for 2009 are June 15th-June 20th (First Session) and July 6th -July 11th (Second Session).
  • After successful completion of the program, the student will be eligible for a scholarship of $2,000 per year, up to four years,for a total of $8,000 if she chooses to attend the St. Catherine University.

ELIGIBILITY:
  • Program enrollment is limited to 25 students per session
  • Students must currently be entering 11th or 12th grade and have a 2.5 grade point average (GPA).
  • The program is open to young women of color who have expressed interest in pursuing higher education.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS:
  • Complete application
  • One letter of recommendation from a teacher.
  • One copy of a transcript or grade report.
  • One short essay on one of the following topics:
1. How could First Step Summer Institute help you meet your goal of going to college and being successful?
2. Who is the person in your family or community that inspires you the most? What is one important lesson you have learned from this
individual?
