October 13, 2005 - Congratulations to the ASL/Interpreting Department. The College of St. Catherine has been selected by the U.S. Department of Education as one of five colleges or universities in the nation to serve as a regional interpreter education center. The award of almost $1.5 million will fund the College’s CATIE (Collaborative for the Advancement of Teaching Interpreting Excellence) Center.
The other four regional centers will be located at Northeastern University, Gallaudet University, University of Arkansas-Little Rock and Western Oregon University. The CATIE Center at St. Kate's will serve the following 10 states: Minnesota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas.
The overall goal of the funding is to significantly increase the number of qualified and credentialed interpreters in the region. To accomplish this, the CATIE Center will serve as a center for state-of-the-art resources on interpreting for interpreter education programs, interpreters, mentors and consumers. Programs and products will emphasize working with diverse linguistic and cultural communities. Examples of the innovative programming that will be developed under this grant include summer intensive legal interpreting coursework in partnership with Hamline University School of Law and post-baccalaureate coursework in medical interpreting.
