September 11, 2006 - Congratulations to Joan Brandt, who continues the work of Carol Pavlish in establishing Community Connections and Collaborations with funding from the National Institutes of Health - National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. The Community Connections and Collaboration Project examines the health experiences of African immigrant women and girls by establishing partnerships with community-based African immigrant and refugee organizations and co-designing a community learning and translational research plan to address the community-identified priorities. Six to eight focus groups are being conducted by researchers and trained facilitators from the community to better understand African immigrant women’s perspective of health and to identify what they perceive to be essential health concerns. Following completion of the data collection, a dialogue will be initiated between the community inquiry partners and key stakeholders, such as community members, health care organizations, educational institutions, community groups, faith-based institutions, and service organizations to analyze the database and how the data pertains to community outreach and health information dissemination to African women and girls in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area.
