American Mesmerism

May 2, 2008 - Congratulations to Dr. David Schmit, Professor of Psychology, who has been awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Science and Society Scholar Award. Dr. Schmit received the award for his project, “American Mesmerism: Science, Society, and the ‘Manipulation of Mental States’ in Mid-Nineteenth Century America.”
He will examine discourses surrounding mesmerism and attempt to understand its place within the history and development of psychology. The award will support research, travel and writing during Dr. Schmit's year-long sabbatical.
