April 2, 2008 - The College has been awarded a grant of $135,000 from the Medtronic Foundation for the new Graduate STEM Certificate program. The new project, to begin in summer 2008 and run for three years, is a faculty development opportunity for Montessori teachers in the area of STEM education.
Using a summer institute model, the program provides in-service K-8 teachers with two weeks of hands-on teacher training followed by an academic year of mentoring and support.
Over the course of the program, teachers will receive content knowledge instruction coupled with curricular design and modeling in STEM areas including earth science, chemistry, life science and engineering.
This program is particularly important as state standardized testing in science areas begins this spring. In addition, St. Kate's expertise in Montessori education combined with the great lack of faculty development opportunities for Montessori teachers makes us a natural entity to lead this much needed project.
