Safety at St. Kate's

Maintaining a safe campus environment is a top priority at St. Kate's. With round-the-clock security staff, resources geared especially for students and a highly responsive safety team, students and staff alike feel good about calling St. Kate's their home.

Round-the-clock operations

The Department of Public Safety is staffed 24 hours per day year-round on both the St. Paul and Minneapolis campuses. All officers are certified in basic first aid, CPR and use of defibrillators. Call (651) 690-8888 at any time, day or night.

Campus-wide safety measures

Emergency telephones are located in the main entrance to all residence halls and academic buildings. Illuminated emergency call boxes located throughout campus offer a direct link to the Department of Public Safety and can be used in both emergency and non-emergency situations to contact officers. Parking lots, walkways and building exteriors are well-lit and checked regularly.

Patrols

Public safety officers perform routine foot, bike and vehicular patrols of all University property. Campus patrols help ensure that safety and security hazards are noted and quickly corrected, suspicious persons/activities are identified and dealt with appropriately and community members build rapport with officers.

Collaborating with law enforcement agencies

The Department of Public Safety works closely with the St. Paul and Minneapolis police departments. Police officers regularly patrol the adjacent streets and visit both campuses.

Campus escorts

Public safety officers will escort students, faculty and staff anywhere on campus. Escorts are offered 24 hours a day to ensure the safety of all community members.

Emergency preparedness

The Director of Public Safety is responsible for implementing and maintaining a comprehensive emergency management plan to guide all operations should an emergency of any kind occur. We maintain an Emergency Preparedness website to keep the University community and parents informed.

In addition, the St. Kate Alert (e2Campus) system allows us to send urgent news to registered subscribers' e-mail accounts and mobile phones via text message. Alerts can also be received via RSS, My Yahoo!, myAOL or iGoogle. The system is convenient for everyone because it reaches people whether they are on or off campus. To register for this service, visit the St. Kate Alert website inside KateWay.

Self-defense classes

Public safety officers conduct self-defense classes for all campus community members. These sessions give students confidence in their personal strength and decrease their vulnerability. The classes are free for students, faculty and staff and are held regularly throughout the year.

Annual security and safety report

In compliance with the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act; a landmark federal law, originally known as the Campus Security Act, St. Catherine University as a recipient of federal student aid resources annually discloses information about crime on and around our campuses. We believe that a community that is well informed about the nature of crime enhances personal safety and encourages active involvement in reporting of crime and suspicious activities.
