Fundraising
Many clubs and organizations choose to supplement the funds they receive from The Senate by organizing various fundraising efforts such as bake sales or candy sales. The Student Center and Activities Office must be informed of all fundraising activities through an Event Request Form at least two weeks prior to the activities. Fundraising activities must also be consistent with the mission of the College of St. Catherine and comply with all local, state, and Federal laws.
Asking for funds or donations of goods or services whether for internal use, activity, or in support of an external organization or fundraiser are permitted so long as the publicity and sales are directed primarily to students, faculty, and staff. Fundraisers directed to internal club use must be dedicated only to funding the organization’s activities that are consistent with the organization’s states purpose(s).
When clubs or organizations plan to solicit gifts or raise funds by approaching individuals, businesses, or agencies outside of CSC, they are required to obtain prior approval. Before requesting donations, please review your plans with the Student Center and Activities Office. This is in effect in order to avoid repetitious requests of potential contributors.
Contributions to clubs and organizations are not tax deductible. If your club or organization receives a monetary gift made to your group, all clubs and organizations are expected to write a note of thanks for all gifts received. Clubs and organizations are required to include the following language into their note of thanks:
“Please be aware that the (name of the organization) does not have a 501 (c) (3) status under the Internal Revenue Code. Consequently, gifts to the (name of the organization) do not qualify for charitable tax deductions.”
Copies of this note need to be sent to your Advisor, the Student Center and Activities Office, and to the Development Office.
Here are a number of ideas to help you get started as you brainstorm fundraising ideas. When planning a fundraiser please keep the following in mind:
- Relevancy-people want to contribute when there is a clear purpose
- You will need to complete and submit an Event Request Form 2 weeks prior to your event.
- Collaborating with another group will help increase your productivity.
Ideas:
- Candy grams such as suckers or chocolate attached to a note can be sent to campus mailboxes. Make up any reason for sending special notes and treats such as “I love my roommate week.”
- Finals Week Care Packages. Campus mail goodie bags with motivational quotes, study tips, healthy treats, and candy.
- Flower sales. Carnations are cheap and last a while.
- Something-A-Thon. Have a campus walk-a-thon, jump rope-a-thon. Have people give donations and find people to sponsor your “thon.”
- Recycle for Profit. Offer to pick up student’s recycling or set up an Atrium Table to collect recycling.
- Cards. Make and sell greeting cards. Make them for the various holidays and include stamped envelopes.
- Bake Sale. Make baked goods and sell them. Make sure that all of your baked items are individually wrapped.
