Elementary Hmong IR6 - 9 pmXiongFall Semester 2008
The purpose of this course is to introduce you to Hmong language and culture. You will learn the consonants, vowels, and tones of Hmong, using the Romanized Popular Alphabet (RPA). You will also learn the structure of the language and basic vocabulary. At the end of this course, you will be able to communicate in everyday situations with native speakers of the language, as well as read and write in Hmong at an elementary level. Along the way, you will be introduced to Hmong history, culture, and traditions through readings, movies, song poetry, and guest lecturers. You will also conduct a research project on some aspect of the Hmong language or culture of particular interest to you. The course has been designed for non-native speakers and for native speakers with no knowledge of the Hmong writing system.

This exciting new course will provide you with the actual hands on experience of planning and executing one of St. Catherine's major and highly regarded public events - The President's Vespers. You will learn effective project management skills in a variety of disciplines including: art and environment (set) design, script development, budgeting and financial management, food and beverage management, donor relations, recruitment and publicity, invitation and program design. With an emphasis on leadership, the course will equip learner with the tools needed for any complex event planning, including weddings, corporate events, and formal receptions. Learn from skilled professionals and actually plan this event, which will be the course's culminating activity on December 9.
