Goals

Background 1:
There are several options you have for CATEGORIZING your plan.

To keep it simple, you may want to consider two categories - educational and professional. (Gary Sanderson suggests three - Individual, Educational, and Professional - I'm not clear on the individual - but it does make for a cute acronym!)

-ACET/CMP break the continuing education units into two categories - Professional and General.

You may choose whatever categories you would like - whatever makes sense to you!

The first question you need to ask yourself is "What do I need/ want to work on?"

Here are some examples of different ideas:

Educational

  • Current trends in educational interpreting
  • Deaf Community and Mainstreaming
  • Degrees
  • Changes in interpreting that affects educational interpreters
  • What is happening in related fields
Learning another language (this could also be considered professional)

Professional

  • Becoming a mentor
  • Certification/ credentials (QA, RID, NAD)
  • Publishing (This may include publishing an article in the RID newsletter, The Views.)
  • Presenting at conferences
  • Attending local, state, regional and national conferences
  • Joining and becoming active in national organizations and Special Interest Groups
  • Branching out into a new area - oral interpreting, cued speech, interpreting, transliterating (whatever is a stretch for you.)
  • Start a professional journal (to document vocabulary, chart progress, ideas for other goals, identify things to check on during prep time, notes regarding what you need to prepare for upcoming assignments.)
