50 Careers You've Never Heard Of
50 Careers You’ve Never Heard Of introduced 140 high school girls to careers in science, technology, engineering, and math that are creative, appealing, and lesser known. During the morning sessions, 20 speakers from government, industry, and non-profit organizations shared their stories on how they came to their scientific careers. To break stereotypes and preconceptions about science, the sessions are organized under nine themes such as Science in Business, Body World, Science of Everyday, and Science of Tomorrow. The day concluded with an activity in which the high school girls discovered the career paths of 50 women in technical fields in the region.
This project funded by a grant from 3M Foundation addresses the problem of the “leaky pipeline,” or trend in which girls and young women veer away from science interests as their career aspirations begin to form, resulting in a science workforce that is predominantly male. With St. Kate’s commitment and expertise in women’s education, 50 Careers showed young women how they can find exciting career opportunities, particularly for girls of color, students of low-income families, and other groups that are not offered these kinds of opportunities.
